Broadstairs

We are a fun-loving class who enjoy coming to school. We can't wait to show you everything we are going to be learning about during this year. We hope you love it as much as we will!

Our teacher is Mr Kennington and Mrs Cawood-Heath will be our amazing TA for this year!

Term 1

Fossil Hunt

Discovering fossils Discovering fossilsDiscovering fossils Cat discovering fossils

As we were unable to visit the Warren this year, we brought the fossils to St Martins. Broadstairs class became palaeontologists as we searched the top field for hidden fossils around the grounds. Through this we were able to find out information about the fossils as well as what it meant for the area's prehistoric geography. Everybody got involved, even the local cats.

Andy Warhol prints

In art we've been looking at different ways to make pictures of the fossils we've found. We looked at the Pop Art movement and how Warhol used printing to make multiple versions of the same picture. We then took that process and applied it to our fossils, making a foam template and rolling paint on to it to create some striking images.

Term 2

Shields

Children showing their Anglo-Saxon shields

This term we are looking at the Anglo-Saxons and how they shaped Britain. We started by looking at the Anglo-Saxon values, linking them to our school's values and then researching how different colours were used to represent these values. We then designed and made our own shields using colours which showed the values which were important to each of us.

Statues

As well as emulating the values of the Anglo-Saxons, we have been historians and have researched some of the important figures. We learned about the start of the Anglo-Saxon era and then made statues to record important people from that time: King Vortigan, Hengist and Horsa.

Term 3

Forces

Forces experiment with a toy car  Predicting forces  Forces experiment  Children wearing lab coats

This term we are donning our lab coats and performing scientific experiments to understand the way forces affect the world. We began by looking at the way pushes and pulls can affect us and then looked at how friction can change the movement of a toy car. We have been following the scientific process, making predictions and seeing whether our work matches what we have predicted.

Jackson Pollack

Child painting  Child painting  Child painting  Child painting

With our new found knowledge of forces, we have been looking at how to use them in new and exciting ways. We have been learning about Jackson Pollack and his action paintings and trying to copy our style in our classroom. Pollack's paintings are all about using the randomness of paint splats to show moods and emotions and we tried to portray different emotions through the drips.

As you can see it has been very dramatic!

Term 4

Wildwood Trip

Children at Wildwood  Children at Wildwood  Children at Wildwood  Children at Wildwood

Our topic this term is a closer look at the systems in the human body and how they compare to animals. In order to get a closer understanding of bones, we visited the Wildwood trust. Whilst  there we were able to see a whole host of animal skeletons in the flesh (or out, to be more accurate) and look at the differences between endo and exoskeletons. We were also able to compare the bones on animal skeletons with our own bones.

After our bones workshop we took the opportunity to see some of the wild animals and even got to show the school value of being a courageous cat by crossing the bear bridge.

Willy Wonka

In English, we have been reading Charlie and the Chocolate factory, exploring the humorous ways Roald Dahl plays with language and writing our own stories and with rich and exciting characters and descriptions. We then looked at the ways Roald Dahl described food and wrote our own descriptions of exciting chocolates. Once the chocolates had been described, we made packaging for them and then made our own chocolates which were taken home to be enjoyed.

Term 5

Cave Painting

Child's cave painting  Child's cave painting  Child's cave painting  Child's cave painting  Child's cave painting

Our topic this term explores the prehistoric era of the Stone Age through to the Iron Age. We turned our classroom into a series of caves and the children had to go under their tables and record the information we learned about the Stone Age through cave paintings. This mimics the fact that there are no prehistoric written records and that archaeologists have learnt about the Stone Age through discarded tools and these leftover works of art.
