Term 4
Our topic this termWhat experiences did children in Dover have during the Second World War? Children will experience events in the order they occurred and then record their own thoughts and feelings in their own secret war-time diary. Children will learn which key countries were involved in World War II (France, Germany, Italy, USA, Japan, Russia and United Kingdom) and that Chamberlain, Churchill, Roosevelt, Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini and Tojo were influential leaders during the war. The children will evaluate the impact of the significant events in our locality, during World War 2, including Operation Dynamo and Pied Piper, The Battle of Britain and The Blitz. Greatest emphasis will be upon how aspects of national history has impacted Dover. Our key skills are using and interpreting primary resources to discuss the past. Children will construct informed responses that involve thoughtful selection and organisation of relevant historical information. --------------------------------Year 6 had a wonderful Learning Lift Off Day dressed as evacuees. We started the day listening to the Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, addressing the nation in 1939 and declaring a state of war before finding out where in the UK it would be that our WW2 character was to be evacuated to. Later on, we created scrapbooks (which will log our learning though the WW2 topic) and then we took a walk through St. Martin's own air raid shelter. More exciting learning to follow! This term is entitled 'World War 2'.
Art Year 6 have been experimenting with different media in order to get the effect of a blitz skyline. Here are some of our finished pieces.
Cat's cradle Y6 have been enjoying some traditional games during break times, such as cat's cradle! I've challenged them to learn how to make the Eiffel Tower!
