Term 1

Our topic this term is Healthy Living.

Learning to clean teeth  Learning to clean teeth

We will learn all the ways we can look after our bodies; from brushing our teeth like a dentist, to becoming a MasterChef and preparing a healthy meal for our families. We will consider a whole-body approach to healthy living. As spectacular Scientists we find out about and describe the basic needs of animals, including humans, for survival and look at the importance for humans of exercise, eating the right amounts of different types of food, and hygiene. As Historians we travel back in time and think about what hospitals and health looked like before the rise of the modern day nursing heroes. We will compare the lives of Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale and think about how they have contributed to society and exploring the idea of legacy.

During our learning lift off we tried a range of activities all linked to our topic ‘Healthy Living’.  We tried foods from our own salad bar, calming yoga activities, used our senses to enjoy some essential oils and bath salts, and sorted foods into healthy and unhealthy. A great start to our topic!

Exercise class

We have also been exploring the effects of exercise on our bodies and expanding our vocabulary to describe how our bodies felt from energised, powerful and exhilarated during our running and jumping activities to peaceful, relaxed and serene during yoga. Super start to the term Dymchurch class, well done!

In DT we have been busy planning, making and evaluating our healthy pasta dishes. We tasted nine different ingredients before deciding our favourite three to be added to our pasta. We chopped cucumbers, carrots, added sweetcorn and tuna amongst other things to prepare a healthy pasta meal. We hope you enjoy eating them as much as we enjoyed making them!

Term 2

For our learning lift off we became explorers, searching the school field for clues about the different explorers we are going to be learning about this term – Amelia Earhart, Neil Armstrong and the Cholita Climbers. Once we found our clues, we worked together to create a fact file and presented to the class some exciting facts about these adventurous pioneers.

Term 3

To kick start our topic this term, we became Crime Scene Investigators discovering what important event took place in 1666. We looked at newspaper articles, diary entries and paintings to figure out when and where the fire started, how it started and the damage to the city it caused. We look forward to learning more about this as the term continues!

Investigating the Great Fire of London  Investigating the Great Fire of London

To help with our maths learning children visited our class shop this week. They could ‘buy’ anything they liked, however they needed to pay exactly with their coins. Great fun was had and a lovely learning experience!

We have also been busy using chalk to draw houses close together like they would have been in London in 1666. A spark started a ‘fire’, so we used ‘buckets’ of water to try and stop the fire spreading. We could not put the fire out in time and the houses were destroyed.

In our writing this term, we have been organising facts into a non-chronological report. I am very impressed with the work produced by everyone in Dymchurch class and am very proud of their final pieces. Here are a couple examples for you to enjoy reading.
